Why Do You Do This, Zoe?
An honest conversation about finding my passion in the most unexpected place
Q: So Zoe, how did you get into pole?
Honestly? I was desperate. I absolutely hated the gym. The atmosphere never clicked with me, I was too lazy to plan workouts, and the thought of running on a treadmill made me want to curl up and hibernate. But I knew something had to change when running for the bus nearly killed me off. That was my wake-up call.
Q: What made you choose pole specifically?
I needed something different—something that didn't feel like traditional exercise. When I walked into my first pole class, I had no idea it would change my life.
Q: Was it love at first spin?
God, no! The start was brutal. Everything hurt. I remember thinking why would someone do something for fun that burns so bad (post pole sit). But then something shifted. Slowly, I started getting stronger. More confident. And before I knew it, I was completely hooked. Pole became my new addiction—in the best possible way.
Q: That's quite the transformation. What kept you coming back?
The growth. Not just physically, but mentally. Every class, I was achieving things I never thought my body could do. My confidence skyrocketed. I felt powerful in a way I'd never experienced at a traditional gym. And I wanted everyone to feel that. I genuinely wanted everyone to try pole and experience that same transformation.
Q: Is that what led you to teaching?
Exactly. Only three years after starting pole, I began teaching. Some people thought that was quick, but I just knew it was what I wanted to do. And honestly? I LOVED it from day one.
Q: What do you love most about teaching?
That sense of achievement when a student nails a new move for the first time—their face lights up, and I feel it too. Or when complete beginners walk in nervous and unsure, and by the end of their first class, they're buzzing with excitement. That's my fuel. That's why I do this.
Q: You must get asked "why" a lot.
All the time! People are curious why someone would choose to teach pole, why I'm so passionate about it, why I started in the first place. And my answer is always the same: because pole gave me something I didn't know I was missing. It gave me strength, confidence, community, and purpose.
Now, I get to share that with others. Every single class reminds me why I fell in love with pole in the first place.
Q: What would you say to someone considering trying pole for the first time?
Just do it. Seriously. You don't need to be strong, flexible, or coordinated. You just need to show up. The rest will come. And who knows? Maybe you'll find it changes your life too.
