Part 2: The Early Years

Before Studios, Before Instagram

In the early 2000s, pole dancing in Scotland was still finding its footing.  It was not widely recognised fitness, artistry or sport, and dedicated studio spaces were rare.

Pole Physique was co created by Valentine (Val) & Julie in the early 2000s, with the intention of making pole accessible, welcoming and empowering.

Classes were originally taught out of nightclubs and bars across Glasgow, including Cube on Queen Street, China White on Bath Street and Silver on Hope Street.

All classes were taught in heels, yes, even tricks up the pole. At the end of each four week block, students would choose a piece of music and showcase what they had been working on.

Community was built quickly, with around 40 to 50 students attending weekly, a huge number for that time.

Finding a permanent base was one of the biggest challenges, but the demand for classes proved that something special was growing.

I began life as a pole dancer working at “The Truffle Club” around 2005 and began teaching myself the art of pole dancing. As it happens, pole dancing was becoming a mainstream phenomenon simultaneously and I took the opportunity to set up Pole Physique. It was marketed as an exercise class, to make it accessible to people of all ages, shapes, genders and ethnicities. 20 years have now passed and the legacy of Pole Physique lives on, which is amazing to see! For me, I have maintained important relationships with my staff and students, over this time, which I will be forever grateful for.
